My Best Friend Died: A Song of Sorrow and Joy

Ever since my best friend died, I’ve been a bit of a dark horse. I often think about death from the perspective of the person who is dying. My stepmom died recently, and I really wanted to have this song made into something that could be sung at her funeral, but I didn’t find anyone.

This song / poem is from the perspective of the best friend or other loved one who has died. This also is from the perspective of someone who believes they are going to a better place.

As I said, I wrote this poem as a song, but am still looking for a song-writer to help me put it to music and get the song out of my head. If you’re a song-writer and feel moved by this poem, please use the contact form and contact me for a potential collaboration!

Finish Line (v1)

When at last my race is done

And I cross that finish line

And step into my home

Into the arms of my Lord

What a great and sweet relief

To at long last, then be done!

What a wonderful day that will be

To be finally, totally free!

But if when I do go home.

You are still down here, alone.

Please remember my destination –

Let that be your consolation!

Weep not for me – for I’ve won. I’ve won!

It was a good race,

It was a hard race,

But at long last, I am done!

Weep not for me, for I am full of joy

And I’ll see you, and pray for you still

That you’ll join me one day

When your own hard race is won.

Your own finish line

May seem very near or far

But no matter the distance,

The road is often hard.

But take it from me

On the other side,

Press on! Press on!

It is well worth the effort tried!

Weep not for me, for I am full of joy

And I’ll see you, and pray for you still

That you’ll join me one day

When your own hard race is won.
